The heritage of Royal TenCate: our story

At TenCate, our history is deeply rooted in the renowned heritage of Royal TenCate, a company with a legacy spanning centuries. We take pride in our journey, which reflects a commitment to innovation and excellence in the artificial grass industry. Let us walk you through our story:
1704 – 1841 From import to producer of yarn
Established in The Netherlands in 1704, TenCate was originally a textile company. Hendrik TenCate from Almelo was a commercial intermediary in the linen industry. He imported yarn from Germany, had it woven into cloths by farmers in the area and then sold it in the Netherlands and abroad. After merging with a weaving factory in 1841, TenCate starts manufacturing yarns. A lot has happened since.

1841 – 2016 Becoming a global innovator in sports surfaces
During the extensive restructuring of the textiles industry in the 1960s, TenCate reinvents itself and starts developing and producing artificial grass. Resulting in new generations of synthetic surfaces particularly suited for sports fields. 2001 marks the start of our global expansion with the first manufacturing plant in the US, followed by the first operations in the Middle East. When TigerTurf and Greenfields join TenCate, in 2009 and 2012 respectively, that globalization process is further continued and the first step towards a vertical organization is made.
 2016 – 2022 Moving from a vertical to a circular organization
In 2016, TenCate is delisted from the Amsterdam Stock Exchange and starts the process towards becoming an independent artificial turf manufacturer, adding landscaping to its portfolio. To better serve our customers, we begin a process of forward integration. Various companies throughout the world are joining, enabling TenCate to serve the entire value chain, from R&D and manufacturing of yarns, backing (by TenCate Grass Components) and turf to installation and maintenance.

With the challenges we are facing today, the only way forward for companies is by embracing circularity. Hence our partnerships with recycling companies GBN (Europe) and ExxonMobil (US), marking a major step in our efforts to fully recycle and reuse all end-of-life turf. With Hellas joining TenCate in 2022, TenCate becomes the largest synthetic turf company in the world.

2023-2030 Towards a circular business model
To further expand the circularity concept, TenCate aims to provide an end-of-life solution for all legacy turf in Europe and the US within the next 5 years. To this end, we support advanced recycling initiatives in both continents to fully recycle end-of-life turf into qualitative virgin raw materials to produce new, high-quality products and materials.

Moreover, our innovation philosophy is aimed at developing a fully circular ONE-DNA ™  synthetic turf solution for all markets; a solution that can be recycled over and over again into new, high-quality artificial grass. For landscaping, the ONE-DNA ™  product is being installed as we speak. For sports, it will be launched shortly. In addition, we continue to develop solutions that help solve societal challenges, like zero-water hockey fields.
